Set in Jeju Island, “Our Blues” follows a group of colourful characters whose lives overlap and diverge at multiple points and teaches us some valuable lessons on love, life, and laughter along the way. The first two episodes of “Our Blues” are focused on the story of EunHui and HanSu, played by Lee JungEun and Cha SeoungWon in adulthood and Shim DalGi and Kim JaeWon in their teenage years. In present time, HanSu is an ordinary branch manager at SS Bank. His wife and daughter are in the United States where the latter is pursuing her dream of playing golf professionally. However, HanSu is struggling with financing his daughter’s career and his marriage is falling apart in the process. When HanSu gets transferred to Pureung, Jeju, he crosses paths with EunHui, his childhood friend, who is now a successful businesswoman. She owns 5 stores at the island seafood market (one of which she runs herself) and has a cafe building to her name too! Despite her extraordinary affluence, she works hard from dawn till dusk. As it turns out, HanSu was EunHui’s first love and quite possibly, her last. As the two meet after 20 long years, memories of their golden days flash in front of their eyes. Back in school, EunHui and HanSu were always the ones getting mocked by classmates for their rural upbringing. One fine day, as EunHui gets on the bus carrying a whole pig on her way to school and HanSu is sitting with a sack of plant products, their peers start to relentlessly pester them. EunHui is bothered but avoids confrontation, which HanSu notices. Seeing that EunHui has no intentions of engaging in a conflict, HanSu does it for her. Since that day, something changes in their dynamic.
On a school trip to Mokpo later on, EunHui decides to ask HanSu about his love life. After a string of impulsive questions, EunHui suggests they kiss to break up the boredom. Taken aback, HanSu brushes it off with a chuckle. Unsure of what to do next, EunHui reaches out for a cigarette in his pocket so she can try smoking. HanSu reacts quickly, holding her hand back to remind her that she should keep being a good girl before proceeding to pat her head gently. Seeing this unexpected side of him, EunHui is even more smitten than before. She blurts out her confession in a hurry, saying that she will be his and he can be hers. HanSu playfully entertains the idea with an adorable “yes, sure” but before he can turn away, EunHui grabs his face and pulls him in for a kiss.
Everything about this kiss, from the height difference to EunHui’s eyes wide open, makes it a perfect work of art and storytelling. The urgency of the confession and the innocence of it all, are what make this scene even more special. We cannot wait to see what’s on the cards for EunHui and HanSu in the future.
